Sandfire Resources NL has announced that the first truckload of direct shipping ore from the enormously high gradeDe Grussa copper and gold project was delivered to the ore pad and will be part of first shipment out of Port Hedland in the Pilbara in April.

De Grussa has an ore reserve of 8.39 million tonnes grading 5.6% copper and 1.8 gram per tonne gold for a contained 466,000 tonnes Cu and 485,000 oz Au. The JORC Code resource is 14.33 MT 4.6% Cu and 1.6 gram per tonne Au for a contained 652,000 tonnes Cu and 742,000 oz Au.

Sandfire opened up the potential for more VMS discoveries in the northern goldfields after decades of exploration that produced several tantalizing hits and one major mining operation the Golden Grove copper, lead, zinc and silver project in the Yalgoo goldfield, now operated by Minmetals group of China.

Mr Karl Simich MD of Sandfire said that the project was ahead of schedule. The pit should extract about 143,000 tonnes of DSO material grading a massive 25.6% copper and 2.5 grams per tonne gold as the company advances underground development into the already substantial reserves at De Grussa in the North Murchison mineral field. The open pit ore is being sold to MRI Trading AG and Yunnan Copper Corporation Limited.

Mr Simich said that moving from the discovery in April 2009 to mining the first saleable product less than three years later is an incredible team effort. 2012 will be a pivotal year as the company moves from first production to join the ranks of Australia's leading mid tier miners.
