Another miner at Vedanta Resources owned Konkola Copper Mines at in Chililabombwe in Zambia died at his place of work on July 11th 2011 barely a week after another miner was fatally wounded and died at the same mine.

Mr Nelson Kalima an employee for one of the contractor companies working with KCM died while working at Nchanga underground during a secondary blasting.

Mr Shapi Shachinda Company’s communications manager said that Mr Kalima met his fate during his work at the underground section of Nchanga, one of the projects under KCM.

The miner regretted the incident that fatally took the life of Mr Kalima and said that investigations have been launched to ascertain the cause of the regrettable accident and to reinforce measures for preventing similar incident in future.

It said “KCM extends its condolences to the family of the deceased during this difficult moment.”

On July 5th 2011, KCM announced that a 44 year old miner died while on duty at Konkola Copper Mine owned concentrator after an accident. Mr Enock Siame a contract worker died while carrying out maintenance work at the old concentrator in Chililabombwe.

KCM, renowned for his unmatched safety rules at the place of work regretted the incident and launched investigations into the cause of the incident. The company would like to assure that it will take corrective measures to prevent similar incidents from reoccurring.

KCM with 79.4% equity in its operations in Zambia has various expansion programs being undertaken at Konkola, Nkana and Nampundwe pyrites operations in Zambia to boost output. It has a labor force of more than 10,000 people with various social responsibility programs within the communities in which it operates.
