Reuters reported that South Africa's National Union of Mineworkers has resumed talks with coal and zinc miner Exxaro over planned job cuts.
NUM last month wanted to go on strike over the layoffs but Exxaro was granted a temporary court order stopping the walkout. The union had said it would ask the court to revoke the order.
Mr Lesiba Seshoka NUM spokesman said that "We have agreed with Exxaro that we will start talks again and in the meantime the court can extend the interim interdict so that we didn't have to go to court. We should be meeting again next week Wednesday.”
Exxaro said in November it might cut as many as 300 jobs as it seeks to improve productivity and reduce costs of services and operations. The strike action would have involved all its operations except the Zincor and Rosh Pinah operations, which are not included in the restructuring scope.
