UAE aluminum giants in forum success

Dubai Aluminum Corporation Limited and Emirates Aluminum Company Limited showcased their technology development expertise at a specialist forum in Tasmania.

The Emirati firms featured an in house research at the 10th Australasian Aluminum Smelting Technology Conference which took place last month in Launceston, Tasmania. Four papers detailing research and development projects at Dubal, an entirely state owned enterprise whose Jebel Ali operation ranks among the world’s largest single site smelters were presented at the conference.

Two were presented by Ms Maryam Mohamed Al Jallaf senior manager of Process Control, Potrooms and Cell Lining namely:
1. Pushing the frontiers of anode current density at Dubal by Mr Ali HAM Al Zarouni, Ms Maryam Mohamed Al Jallaf and Mr Arvind Kumar and

2. Impact of TiB2 granules on cathode wear and metal quality by Ms Maryam Mohamed Al Jallaf, Ms Margaret Hyland, Mr Barry Welch and Mr Ali H A M Al Zarouni.

The other two Dubal papers were presented by Abdalla Al Zarouni senior manager of Technology Development namely:
1. Dubal high amperage cell technology; From DX to DX+' - by Mr Ali HAM Al Zarouni, Mr Abdalla Al Zarouni, Mr Nadia Ahli, Mr Lalit Mishra, Mr B Kakkar, Mr David Spencer and Mr Michel Reverdy and

2. Dubal experience of low voltage PFC emissions by Mr Ali HAM Al Zarouni and Mr Abdalla Al Zarouni.

Emal, the green field smelter development at Al Taweelah, Abu Dhabi, owned jointly by Dubal and Mubadala said that its representative Mr David Spencer presented a key research paper entitled Commissioning of Emal Smelter by Mr Salman Dawood Abdulla, Mr Walid Al Sayed, Mr BK Kakkar and Mr David Spencer.

The two firms also sponsored the welcome reception for delegates to the event. Speaking at the reception, Ms Maryam Mohamed Al Jallaf reiterated that the Dubal Emal corporate strategy driven vision was to produce 2.5 million tonnes per annum by 2015.

She also emphasized that Dubal was investing both in developing new technology and upgrading existing technologies so as to maintain a competitive edge. Its capabilities in the transfer of technology were also highlighted, using Emal Phase I to illustrate the point.

Mr Ali HAM Al Zarouni VP Smelting Operations said that this year’s meeting offered a credible forum for sharing technology related information with an international audience representing diverse stakeholder groups. As a company, we thrive on innovation and collaboration.

He said that “Global events such as these always provide a great opportunity for us both to learn from others and share our own expertise which in turn raises awareness of Dubal Emal’s technology related capabilities.”
