The unexpected increase in the inflow of orders from major consumers of products manufactured by the VSMPO-Avisma Corporation has compelled the company to look for titanium sponge suppliers outside Russia. In the first quarter of 2010, Boeing and Airbus exceeded the purchase amount of titanium forgings by 10% as compared to the target level set by the Russian corporation.
The Avisma titanium and magnesium integrated factory was not prepared for such amendments in the production program, which required additional supplies of titanium sponge amounting to 4500 tonnes to be delivered to the Verkhnaya Salda Metallurgical Production Association within the current year. The factory can assume responsibility only for one third of this amount. Another 1800 tonnes of sponge will be bought from the Zaporozhye titanium and magnesium integrated factory.
The representatives of the corporation have informed RusBusinessNews that the 2011 Business Plan makes provision for the further growth of orders for VSMPO products from aircraft manufacturers whose increased interest was confirmed by the company successful participation in the Farnborough Airshow. Therefore, Avisma intends to go back to the previous output levels, producing 30,000 tonnes of titanium sponge a year. In addition, the Zaporozhye factory agrees to increase supplies to the Urals.
