Shenzhen Zhongjin Lingnan Nonfemet resumed operation at its Shaogang Metal Smelting Factory after a production freeze imposed on it on October 21st 2010 after it was found to have discharged thallium into the Beijing River in Shaoguan city.
The source said that Thallium, a soft gray poor metal and its compounds are highly toxic. The deadly element is also odorless and tasteless. That was not the first time the factory was sanctioned for pollution issues. In 2005 it was found to have discharged cadmium directly into a river. The factory stopped the production for two months following that incident.
The production halt will directly reduce Zhongjin Nonfemet’s net profits by CNY 27 million per month. The firm also incurred a non current expense of CNY 99.72 million from a pollution incident in the Q1 of this year.
