
Arab Steel reported that the board of Directors of the Arab Iron and Steel Union in its regular meeting session No.101 held in Algeria on the June 1st 2010 elected Dr Hilal Tuwairqi CEO of the Saudi Tuwairqi Holding Group, as chairman of the AISU Board of Directors which includes 24 companies from 13 countries.
The election of Dr Tuwairqi to succeed Mr Ahmad Ezz CEO of Ezz Steel of Egypt comes within the framework of the periodic alternation over the Chairmanship of AISU, a policy that stipulates re electing the Chairman every 2 years.
The AISU Board elected 3 vice chairmen form Algeria, Saudi Arabia and Syria. New companies also joined AISU such as Emirates Steel Industries of UAE and Rajhi Steel of Saudi Arabia.
The AISU Board is comprised of the major Arab iron and steel producers, the production of 5 of which from Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, UAE and Morocco marked nearly 10.9 million tonnes of longs production in 2009, ie nearly 50% of the overall Arab steel production of finished products. In addition, the Board includes major Arab companies producing iron ore from Mauritania, Algeria and Bahrain, as well as a number of steel producing companies from Libya, Tunisia, Syria, Jordan and Kuwait.
