Daewoo Engineering & Construction Co, a leading South Korean builder, said that it has clinched a USD 500 million deal to clean up a river flowing through the Algerian capital.
The contract calls for cleaning 18 kilometers of the El Harrach river and its banks to significantly improve the water quality and permit the building of various recreational and cultural facilities.
Daewoo Engineering said that the deal also calls for parklands and ecological swamps to be created with monitoring systems set up to check water pollution levels and guard against floods.
The project comes after Algiers reviewed cleanup operations carried out on South Korea's Han River in the past few decades, and accepted a plan by state run Korean Environmental Industry and Technology Institute to push forward similar measures for the El Harrach.
