Construction Week reported that the Phase 3 expansion will see the construction of a flat product steel facility

Emirates Steel, the largest integrated steel manufacturer in the UAE, is to award the USD 817 million contracts for the Phase 3 expansion of its plant later this year.

Emirates Steel is a direct subsidiary of Abu Dhabi Basic Industries Corporation which is in turn wholly owned by General Holding Corporation, an Abu Dhabi government owned industrial investment vehicle.

Mr HE Hussin Jasim Al Nowais chairman of GHC said that “We’re expanding our steel business by increasing the capacity by 2 million tonnes. The work will produce what is known in the steel industry as the flat product as opposed to the rebar. This will mean an investment of roughly AED 3 billion. We’ll award the contract this year.”

The Phase III will facilitate a steel melting plant, a hot rolled coil mill and ancillaries that will manufacture products aimed at the downstream industrial market. The new facility will commercially produce hot rolled coils anticipated by mid 2014 adding an additional production capacity of 1.6 million tonnes per annum to the plant as a whole.

Mr Suhail Mubarak Musallam Athaeeth Al Ameri chairman of Emirates Steel said that the project has already drawn interest from international contractors and is expected to be completed within thirty months.

He said that the development adds to Emirates Steel’s first two phases of expansion which cost USD 2.72 billion in total and took the project’s total capacity to more than 2 million tonnes.
