Turkey's largest integrated steelmaker Erdemir has announced that it is preceding with its pig iron production started on May 10th 2012 at its Iskenderun works.

Erdemir said that it aims to meet the requirements of the domestic foundry industry for pig iron, the industry's main raw material, and to reduce dependency on imports.

According to Erdemir's statement, in 2011 pig iron producers in Turkey, operating with a capacity utilization rate of 80% produced 1.10 million tonnes of pig iron while the industry's exports accounted for 57% of total sales.

Erdemir stated that its pig iron output capacity utilization is shaped depending on demand, while its production project for sale of pig iron with low manganese content is in progress.
