Arab Steel reported that Moroccan flats producer Maghreb Steel has acquired a scrap shredder for its Casablanca plant.
The company said that the shredder, supplied by Finnish company Metso is expected to start operating at the end of May in line with the scheduled start of a new electric arc furnace and plate mill. The shredder can process 300,000 tonnes per year of scrap.
Maghreb Steel currently produces hot rolled coil, cold reduced coil, hot dip galvanized and color coated. By the end of June the company will be able to produce 1 million tonne per year of crude steel from scrap and 0.5 million tonne per year of plate.
Maghreb will use scrap and hot briquetted iron to feed its new EAF. The scrap will mainly be purchased on the international market as the quality of domestic material is still considered too low for flats production.
