Meed reported that Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company has awarded the contract for front end engineering and design services for its carbon capture and storage program to the US’ Mustang Engineering. Mustang is a subsidiary of international energy services company, John Wood Group.

The project is the first of a series of schemes designed to capture carbon dioxide emissions produced by power and industrial plants in Abu Dhabi. The captured gas will be used for enhanced oil recovery. It will be transported through pipelines and injected into oil fields operated by Abu Dhabi National Oil Company.

The Feed work is expected to be completed in 10 months, after which tenders will be issued for the four main engineering, procurement and construction packages on the project. A total of five million tonnes a year of carbon dioxide will be captured under the first phase of the programme and the scheme will come on line in 2013.

Three sites are understood to have been selected for the carbon capture scheme so far. They are an existing independent water and power project at Taweelah, the planned Emirates Aluminum captive power plant, also at Taweelah and the Emirates Steel Industries rolling mill at Mussafah, near Abu Dhabi city.
