MEED reported that state run investment vehicle Mubadala Development Company is inviting at least 9 pre qualified groups to bid for the AED 5 billion main construction contract on the Cleveland Clinic project in Abu Dhabi.

The medical facility is one of the largest deals to be tendered in the emirate this year and has received keen interest from contractors.

As per report pre qualifiers include the local/UK Al-Futtaim Carillion; the local/Australian Al-Habtoor Leighton Group; the local Al-Naboodah Contracting with Spain's Obrascon Huarte Lain; the local/Lebanese Arabian Construction Company with Bam of the Netherlands; the local Arabtec Construction with Greece's Aktor; the local/UK Dutco Balfour Beatty with Athens-based Consolidated Contractors Company; UK-based Laing O'Rourke; the local/Saudi Oger Abu Dhabi and South Korea's Samsung Corporation with the local/Belgian Six Construct Abu Dhabi.

One source said that "The list is much longer than we would have liked. But it is a sign of the times. Everyone is hungry and we have to compete."

To pre qualify, Mubadala asked would-be bidders to demonstrate experience in building large medical facilities and in delivering contracts of at least AED 3 billion.

Located on Sowwah Island between Reem Island and the Mina Zayed area of Abu Dhabi Island, the scheme involves the design and construction of a 360 bed hospital and a 324 room clinic, with a total built up area of up to 417,000 square meters.
