Nakilat Damen Shipyards Qatar has successfully launched its monumental first project, the 140m Load Out and Recovery Barge at Erhama Bin Jaber Al Jalahma Shipyard in the Port of Ras Laffan, Qatar.
The 6,500 tonne LOR Barge was constructed entirely at Erhama Bin Jaber Al Jalahma Shipyard and took 1.6 million man hours to complete. Throughout the build of the LOR Barge, NDSQ also drew on the expertise of the sub contractors that make up Qatar’s fast growing marine industry.
The LOR Barge will now form part of NDSQ’s yard infrastructure. The company will use it to launch vessels built at Erhama Bin Jaber Al Jalahma Shipyard where NDSQ is currently constructing a further 19 workboats up to 32 meters in length.
After the launch, the LOR Barge will enter a phase of commissioning. Final delivery of the LOR Barge to the shipyard’s owner Qatar Petroleum will be in a few weeks’ time when commissioning is complete. A formal ceremony will be held to mark the occasion.
NDSQ is JV between Qatari shipping company Nakilat and Dutch shipbuilding group Damen Shipyards. Launched in 2010, NDSQ builds ships in steel, aluminum and GRP up to 170 meters in length. NDSQ is based at Erhama Bin Jaber Al Jalahma Shipyard on Qatar’s northeast coast along with fellow Nakilat JV N-KOM which carries out repair and fabrication for ships and off and onshore structures.
Nakilat is Qatar’s premier shipping, maritime services and marine construction company. In addition to overseeing the world’s largest fleet of LNG vessels, Nakilat is spearheading the rise of Qatar’s marine industry via ventures such as NDSQ and N-KOM at Erhama Bin Jaber Al Jalahma Shipyard.
