RATP Dev, the world's fifth largest urban transport operator, said it has successfully implemented the first line of Algiers metro system through its subsidiary RATP El Djazaïr.
The metro's 14 trains with six air-conditioned carriages will be stopping at ten stations and catering to six municipalities Bachdjarah, El Magharia, Hussein Dey, El Hamma, Sidi M'Hamed and Algiers Centre, said a statement from Paris based RATP Group.
The metro carried a record one million passengers during its first month of operation on the 9 kilometers long line comprising nine underground stations with lateral platforms.
The entry into service of the Algiers metro system illustrates the two fold expertise of RATP Dev, which has demonstrated its technical know how and ability to train operating staff.
RATP said it will be bringing this expertise and know-how to develop its business in the Gulf countries. The company is currently active in the region through its partnership with Saptco for the operation of future light rail and metro networks in Saudi Arabia. It was also nominated preferred bidder for the Dubai based Al Sufouh Light Railway operating contract.
The French group said it aims to further develop links with the authorities in the UAE and Qatar, where numerous transport projects are set to be launched in the coming years.
RATP Dev said it was selected in 2007 by Entreprise du Metro d'Alger to run and maintain Algiers' first metro line. With this launch, the company has provided its experience as a multi modal operator along with its ability to train operating staff.
In 2009, RATP Dev set up a local subsidiary, RATP El Djazaïr which will maintain Line 1 for an eight year term starting from November 2011.
