AK News quoted the Iraqi Ports Company as saying that the third Turkish barge Ram Sultan docked Friday in the port Abu Fulous in Basra province. It will produce 110 MW of electricity to help fill the country's acute electricity deficit.
The Aram Sultan electric barge is the third of its kind to reach Iraqi ports according to a contract signed by the Electricity Ministry in 2009 with a Turkish company to generate electricity in Basra.
The first barge reached to port of Umm Qasr in early May 2010 while the second docked in the port of Khor al Zubair on June 9th 2011. According to the contract the capacity of production of the two barges must reach to 250 MW. Their production did not reach the planned level due to problems in production.
Mr Anmar al Safi a media official for Iraqi Ports Company said that the 157 meter barge docked under the supervision of the company's director.
Iraqis depend on generators to address the continuing electricity deficit that reaches up to 18 hours a day. Iraq needs at least 14,000 MW to meet the high demand for energy while it only produces 7,000 MW.
