According to the Turkish Pipeline Corporation and the Energy Market Regulatory Agency, The price of natural gas has increased by 9.8% and the price of electricity by 10.1%.

Mr Recep Tayyip Erdoğan PM of Turkey earlier said that the state had no other choice but to charge people more for natural gas which has become more expensive due to upwards pressure increasing oil prices have exerted on natural gas prices.

The official announcement came from BOTAŞ, which also said the price hike was unavoidable due to the increasing oil prices. The move also increased electricity prices since half of the electricity which Turkey consumes is produced from natural gas, spelling even more financial trouble for the country's people.

The EPDK announced the new electricity price tariff in the Official Gazette. Electricity prices have seen a 10.1% rise according to the announcement which also said the Turkish Electricity Trading and Contracting Company will now sell electricity for TRL 20.08 per kilowatt hour, a TRL 1.89 increase from the previous price.
