It is reported that government is working on ushering in 10 ultra supercritical power projects of 800 MW capacity each.

Mr S Seshadri member of Central Electricity Authority told newspersons that “These could be ready for tendering next month, after the current proposal for putting up 11 supercritical projects of 800 MW each is finalized.”

Mr Seshadri said that notice inviting tenders for the 11 power projects of NTPC and Damodar Valley Corporation will be issued next month.

In response to a question, Mr Seshadri said that the orders for boilers would be placed on two bidders (L1 and L2); the orders for turbines for the least three bidders (L1, L2 and L3). Significantly, local manufacture of equipment is mandatory.

This is seen as an attempt to thwart cheap Chinese equipment from entering India.

Mr MR Ganesan VP Business Development of EPT Engineering Services said that 11 projects that are to be tendered for in a bunched fashion is a considered to be an epochal move in the Indian power sector because it enables standardization of specification across a capacity of 8,800 MW.
