Nucor Corporation announced consolidated net loss of USD 29.5 million for the third quarter of 2009 as compared to a net loss of USD 133.3 million in the second quarter of 2009, an improvement of 78%. The results compare to net income of USD 734.6 million in the third quarter of 2008.
In the first nine months of 2009, Nucor reported a consolidated net loss of USD 352.5 million as compared with net earnings of USD 1.73 billion in the first nine months of 2008.
In the third quarter of 2009, Nucor's consolidated net sales increased 26% to USD 3.12 billion compared with USD 2.48 billion in the second quarter of 2009 and decreased 58% compared with USD 7.45 billion in the third quarter of 2008. Average sales price per ton increased 1% from the second quarter of 2009 and decreased 45% from the third quarter of 2008. Total tons shipped to outside customers were 5,114,000 tons in the third quarter of 2009, an increase of 24% over the second quarter of 2009 and a decrease of 24% from the third quarter of 2008.
In the first nine months of 2009, Nucor's consolidated net sales decreased 58% to $8.25 billion, compared with USD 19.51 billion in last year's first nine months. Average sales price per ton decreased 32% while total tons shipped to outside customers decreased 38% compared to the first nine months of 2008.
The average scrap and scrap substitute cost per ton used in the third quarter of 2009 was USD 299, a decrease of 4% compared with USD 312 in the second quarter of 2009 and a decrease of 44% from USD 533 in the third quarter of 2008. The average scrap and scrap substitute cost per ton used in the first nine months of 2009 decreased 29% to USD 312 compared to USD 439 in the first nine months of 2008.
