London mayor plans GBP 15 million iconic steel monument for Olympic Park
Tuesday, 27 Oct 2009

It is reported that Mr Boris Johnson mayor of London is planning a GBP 15 million tower for the Olympic Park in Stratford. The structure would be funded by steel magnate Mr LN Mittal and built in time for the 2012 Games.

A 138 meters pylon structure known as the crimsom tower is understood to be one of the contenders.

Five artists are in contention including former Turner prize winner Mr Anish Kapoor, Mr Paul Fryer and Mr Antony Gormley, who designed the Angel of the North.

A spokeswoman said that "The Mayor is keen to see stunning, ambitious, world class art in the Olympic Park and has been working with the Olympic Delivery Agency over many months to explore a series of commissioning projects."

She added that "The Mayor is also in touch with prominent figures in the art establishment and philanthropists about taking these forward and getting private backing. This work is at an early stage and details will be announced when the projects are confirmed."
