Coke making resumes at Essar Steel Algoma after fire
Sunday, 01 Nov 2009

The Sault Star reported that coke making resumed at Essar Steel Algoma on Thursday, a day after a fire in the steel maker's coal handling system.

Ms Brenda Stenta manager of corporate communications on late Thursday afternoon said that coke production began in the morning following repairs and an inspection following the blaze.

She said “It should be production as usual in coke making.”

Cause of the fire, which began shortly after 8AM and was under control in about two hours Wednesday, is still under investigation.

Steel production was not affected because Essar already had a supply of coke, the blast furnace fuel produced from a blend of coal.
