Slowdown signs - Romanian building permits drop by 23pct YoY

In September 2009, Romanian municipalities issued 4,724 construction permits for home buildings, down by 23.4% YoY and up by 1.5% MoM.

In September 2009, 1.441 fewer permits were issued for home buildings compared to the same period of last year, decline reflected in all areas.

The biggest declines were observed in
North East (-385 permits)
Bucharest-Ilfov (-265 permits)
Center (-195 permits)
South Muntenia (-188 permits)
South-West Oltenia (-142 permits)

Of all the building permits issued by municipalities for residential buildings, in September 2009, 64.3% are for the rural area. According to the statistics office, data broken down by regions shows increases in the number of permits in four areas: Center (+153), Bucharest-Ilfov (+77), North-West and South-East (+4 each). In the remaining regions, building permits fell in the period under review.

During January to September 2009 period, municipalities issued 37,758 building permits, 20.4% fewer than the same period of last year. The biggest decreases were observed in: Bucharest-Ilfov (-2641), South-Muntenia (-1469), North-East (-1424), and Center (-1238).
