The East Jaintia Coal Miners and Owners Association have urged the Meghalaya government to keep in abeyance its plan to implement the proposed mining policy.
As per report the association a powerful body of coal mine owners and miners in Jaintia Hills has also asked the government to constitute a joint advisory committee to draft a useful policy compared to the one drafted by the state government.
The draft mining policy seeking the people’s opinion was recently drafted by the government. Many feel this will jeopardize the interests of the coal mine owners in the state.
Mr L Deibormi Rymbai president of the association addressing a news conference said that while opposing the policy, the intention of the organization is to protect the marginal coal miners and mine owners.
He said a joint advisory committee should be constituted by the government with representation from experts, social organizations and professionals to have an effective mining policy, unlike the one framed by the state government.
Mr Rymbai said that the advisory committee could invite suggestions, views and comments for drafting a good and useful mining policy.
Earlier, the Opposition NCP had criticized the policy saying that the intention of the government was to take over all the coal mines from private owners.
