KBR will be part of the team unveiling the design for the world’s longest marine causeway, the Qatar and Bahrain Causeway. The project will be showcased November 22nd 2009 at the Bridges Middle East Conference in Abu Dhabi of United Arab Emirates.
As Programme Manager, KBR is responsible for management of the design and construction on behalf of the client, the Qatar and Bahrain Causeway Foundation while the Qatar and Bahrain Causeway Consortium is the design/build contractor. All parties are presenting at the conference.
When completed, this multi modal connection of approximately 40 kilometres between Bahrain and Qatar will feature a 2 lane dual carriageway, including 17 kilometres of embankments and a further 23 kilometres of viaducts and bridges, with 2 bow string arch bridges soaring up to 40 meters above shipping channels. The scheme includes the infrastructure to support freight and high speed rail passenger traffic. It is envisioned that the railway will connect Kuwait to Oman, to become the main rail link for the Arabian Gulf countries.
Mr Colin Elliott KBR’s president of Infrastructure and Minerals said that "KBR is honoured to have been selected as the Program Manager for this significant bi national transportation infrastructure project one of our biggest infrastructure projects and we are looking forward to showcasing our plans at the Bridges Middle East Conference. I am confident that KBR’s partnership with the Qatar and Bahrain Causeway Foundation and our unwavering commitment to our client and the project will see the successful completion of this long awaited infrastructure."
In November 2008, the QBCF awarded KBR the contract to provide design management, project management and construction management services for the Qatar and Bahrain road and rail marine crossing. The QBCF is a bi national institution created in 2006 by the Emir of Qatar and the King of Bahrain to develop and manage the causeway project.
