Associated Press reported that hundreds of coal miners have taken to the streets of their mining city in western Romania to protest low salaries and work conditions.

Miners shouted "Thieves, thieves," and refused to go to down the mines Monday, marching to the company's headquarters in the city of Petrosani, in the second such protest in a month.

They called on the state owned company to respect an agreement signed in January that gives them a 10% wage increase.

The state owned coal mining company in Petrosani has seven mines and employs 7,800 people.

Romania is expected to lay off 3,300 mining employees by 2018, as part of an agreement with the International Monetary Fund.
