Alpha Natural Resources officially opened its new corporate headquarters facility in Bristol, Va. The five-story, 130,000 square foot building is located on 30 acres in the Sugar Hollow Business Complex.
Virginia Governor Robert McDonnell and other state and local dignitaries joined Alpha employees for a ribbon cutting ceremony at the building Monday afternoon. A group of 14 coal miners cut a "ribbon" of miners' belts to signify the opening of the building.
Mr Kevin Crutchfield CEO of Alpha Natural Resources said that "We are thrilled to be moving into a wonderful, state-of-the-art space in the same area of Southwest Virginia where we began the business in 2002. In less than 10 years, Alpha has grown from a concept on a piece of paper to the world's fifth largest coal supplier. From a handful of original employees in the area, we now have approximately 325 who are moving into this state of the art facility. We are grateful for the outstanding partnerships we have with city, county and state leaders, whose support and commitment made today's event happen. This is a proud moment for Alpha."
The energy efficient building has been registered with the U.S. Green Building Council for LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification for commercial interiors. Alpha worked closely with local architect Thompson & Litton, and general contractor, BurWil Construction Co to create a building with numerous energy efficiency features that exemplify its commitment to sustainable energy practices.
Mr Bill Prince president and COO of BurWil Construction Co said that "This has been an enormously successful project. We are pleased to have been a part of it. It's a great example of what can be done with new construction that respects the environment.”
