The National Development and Reform Commission is thought to have held a meeting on May 13 to discuss electricity price increase in five provinces, including Hunan and Anhui, in order to alleviate the regions’ ongoing power shortages.

It is understood that the rising coal price is the main reason behind the power shortages in these provinces, many power plants have suspended operations due to their high costs. Power plants are incurring CNY 0.02 per KWh losses considering the coal price alone, according to an insider from Datang’s Hunan Branch.
