AAP reported that miner and steelmaker Arrium Ltd has made its first sale of iron ore from its Southern Iron operation in South Australia.

Arrium said the new mine at Peculiar Knob was operating and the first sale was made via rail to Darwin.

The company is working to expand its Whyalla Port facility to enable a significant increase in iron ore sales, and shipments are expected to begin later this year.
