Think-tank and research body The Australia Institute claims the Federal Government could lose billions of dollars in carbon tax if changes aren't made to the way fugitive emissions from coal seam gas are calculated.
The institute, using figures from American research, says CSG produces more than twice that amount.
Economist Matt Grudnoff said that, at current Australian estimates, the gas industry won't pay its fair share of carbon tax. He said that "The implications are that the carbon price signal for coal seam gas producers, in particular, will be blunted. So there'll be no incentive for them to introduce technology in order to reduce emissions."
