BHPB bid for Rio - South Africa subpoenas BHPB for information

Bloomberg is reported that BHP Billiton, which has made a USD142 billion hostile bid for Rio Tinto Group, is subpoenaed by South African antitrust regulators to provide information.
Mr Shan Ramburuth Competition Commissioner told Bloomberg that “I can confirm that we subpoenaed BHP in order to supply us with documents they were resisting to do.''
He declined to elaborate on the type of information he sought.
He added that “BHP is challenging the subpoena.”
The tribunal will hear an urgent application by BHPB to set aside the summons on August 28th 2008 and August 29th 2008.
