Vale SA the world’s largest iron ore mining company said that a court ruling that allows the government to charge the company as much as BRR 25 billion (USD 13.5 billion) in taxes isn’t final and will be appealed.
Rio de Janeiro-based Vale in a statement said that the ruling has no immediate economic or financial impact. The company was notified of the decision on Nov. 28 and plans to appeal to higher courts, including the Supreme Court of Justice.
The federal government on November 22 won a dispute in a federal court in Rio de Janeiro over the tax on profits from the company’s overseas units, Nascimento Netto an attorney at the finance ministry, said in an interview yesterday. While Vale can appeal the decision, the government does not need to wait for the appeals ruling to start charging the taxes.
