TOI recently reported that CITU has lodged an FIR at Jamuria police station against the GM, the agent and the manager of Kunustoria Colliery of Coal India Limited’s Eastern Coalfields Limited for failing to take timely action that could have prevented the disastrous fire in one of the best quality non coking coal reserves of the state.
Mr Naba Kumar Mishra vice president of CITU's ECL wing has lodged the FIR alleging that though an 800 tonne coal chunk had fallen in the No 2 pit in January, the colliery management took no steps to clear the debris. The loose coal falling inside the underground mine for such a long time caught fire.
Mr Mishra said that "Anyone with technical expertise should know that loose coal would catch fire if not cleared soon. Then why did the ECL management not bother to clear the debris?”
The ECL management sealed the mine after a methane gas explosion on October 29.
