The tuna industry said that the latest deal for Eyre Peninsula iron ore exports through Port Lincoln in South Australia highlights the need for an alternative port facility.

It may be noted that Centrex Metals has reached financial closure on a JV with investment partner Wuhan Iron and Steel. A USD 102 million payment has been made this week.

Mr David Ellis research manager at Southern Bluefin Tuna said that it highlights the urgent need for exports through a yet to be developed port at Sheep Hill, rather than further down the coast at Port Lincoln where there would be a risk of pollution affecting the fishing industry.

He added that "The development of Sheep Hill will underpin a whole range of mineral extraction on Eyre Peninsula and if we do it properly the whole region will benefit rather than disadvantaging industries that have been proven, tested to be part of the regional stability."

Mr Peter Davis mayor of Port Lincoln said that the mining deal highlights a lack of State Government foresight. He added that "It's wonderful news for Centrex but it again confirms the stupidity of fooling around in Port Lincoln. The State Government, if they had any idea at all of long term planning and development, should have instigated a deep sea port somewhere between Tumby Bay and Whyalla 2 to 3 years ago."
