Bloomberg cited Mr Cao Peixi President of China Huaneng Group as saying that the company targets a capacity to produce about 35% of its electricity from clean energy by 2020 as the country seeks to cut pollution.
Mr Cao said the parent company of Hong Kong-listed Huaneng Power International Inc will increase its development of alternative energy including solar wind, hydro and nuclear.
He said that China Huaneng plans to reduce coal consumption per kilowatt-hour of electricity by about 10% to 304 grams by 2020. He added that the company plans to complete the construction of the country’s first power plant that converts coal into cleaner-burning gas before the end of next year.
The pilot 250-megawatt plant will be in the northern port city of Tianjin.
