According to Mr Xie Zhenhua vice minister of the National Development and Reform Commission, China might be able to achieve the 2006 to 2010 energy saving goal.

Mr Xie said China has so far cut its energy consumption per CNY 10,000 of GDP by 13% putting it on track to achieve the 2006 to 2010 energy saving goal

He said that “China is still in the middle of the industrialization and urbanization process. It is hard for the country to reach the energy saving target, especially amid the global financial crisis, but China is doing the best it can to increase energy efficiency and cut emissions.”

Mr Xie expected the energy consumption per CNY 10,000 of GDP to fall about 5% during the whole year of 2009 and 4% to 5% in 2010. He said that China has made commitments to protect the environment and deal with the climate change because it has responsibilities to its citizens and humankind. China decision will not be based on environmental protection actions of other countries.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics, China energy consumption per CNY 10,000 of GDP was down by 1.79%YoY in 2006, 4.04% in 2007, 4.59% in 2008 and 3.35% in the H1 of 2009.

With the energy saving goal completed, China will be able to save 620 million tonnes of standard coal and cut carbon dioxide emissions by 1.5 billion tonnes.
