It is reported that a coal carrier has been detained off the Queensland coast after the Australian Maritime Safety Authority discovered cracks in its hull during a routine safety investigation.

The Newlead Venetico has been anchored offshore from the coal terminals at the Port of Hay Point since January 4 when the two cracks were discovered in its hull.

Temporary repairs have been made to the vessel which was half loaded with 67,000 tonnes of coal when the inspection took place, but a spokesperson from AMSA said the next steps were unclear.

He said that “A meeting will be held later today to discuss whether the temporary repair will be sufficient or whether the coal needs to be unloaded and a more thorough repair take place.”
