The Sierra Club is joining the Bad River Indian tribe in opposing a new iron ore mine in far northern Wisconsin.
The environmental group Wisconsin chapter said the mine would pollute the area watershed with mercury, dust and other types of heavy metal.
The Sierra Club said even small amounts of water pollution would hurt the Indians harvests of wild race and the mine dust could cause health problems.
But Gogebic Taconite said it doesn’t even know what chemicals are on the property yet because it has not analyzed the site.
The firm is not responding to the Sierra Club statements.
Gogebic Taconite proposed the USD 1.5 billion dollar mine earlier this year for Ashland and Iron counties. The project is on hold while state lawmakers work on plans to shorten the state process for considering new mines.
