AP reported that 2 environmental groups are suing an Eastern Kentucky coal mine claiming violations of the Clean Water Act.

The suit filed in US District Court in Pikeville last week claims two discharge points from a Laurel Mountain Resources mine in Johnson County have released water containing selenium into local waterways.

The Sierra Club and Kentuckians for the Commonwealth want the company to pay civil penalties and conduct monitoring to prevent pollution.

Sierra Club member Mr Rick Clewett told the Appalachian News-Express that he thinks coal mining is incompatible with healthy streams
