Environmentalists condemned proposed mine in Tarkine region

Conservationists said that a proposed iron ore mine in Tasmania's Tarkine region has the potential to cause serious environmental damage.

The Perth based company Shree Minerals has lodged an environmental impact submission with the Federal Government, detailing its plan mien to haematite at Nelson Bay.

Mr Scott Jordan from the Tarkine National Coalition said that the lapsing of an Emergency National Heritage Listing in December means the project will have fewer environmental hurls.

He said that "We're very concerned, not only about the impact on threatened species and there's six commonwealth listed species known to be on site including the Tasmanian devil, the wedge tailed eagle but there's also the potential impact on the Nelson Bay River itself."
