Strike action by Thiess contracted miners at the Xstrata owned Collinsville mine in the Bowen Basin’s north, now entering its fourteenth day, has seen the coal giant declare force majeure on domestic supplies.
An Xstrata spokesperson said the miners, who downed tools over a pay dispute, are expected to continue the industrial action until 6AM on August 13 morning. Force majeure has been called for supply to the mines domestic customer, the Callide power station. But Xstrata is still trying to meet the contracted tonnages to its foreign customers through the Abbot Point Coal Terminal drawing on coal from its nearby operations, the spokesperson said.
A spokesperson for North Queensland Bulk Ports Corporation said the strike had yet to disrupt exports despite the fact workers have allegedly prevented trains from servicing the mine. Thiess was unavailable for immediate comment.
