Xinhua reported that9 people were killed by an underground gas explosion in a central China coal mine.

The accident happened Saturday afternoon at a mine in Hunan Povince’s Sandu township.

It was unclear if there were more than nine people in the mine in Hunan province at the time of the Sunday morning explosion, but rescuers were told to stop their efforts.

The cause of the explosion was under investigation.
