It is reported that the Gloucester council is stepping up efforts to stop a proposed open cut coal mine in the town, with news that a mining company recently purchased 5 local farming properties.
Ms Julie Lyford, mayor of Gloucester said that about 180 residents met her this week, concerned that surrounding farmers have caved in to Gloucester resources by selling their properties close to the township.
Ms Lyford further said that in January 2009, the council hopes to meet Mr Ian Macdonald, minister of mineral resources of UK and ask him not to renew the company's exploration licenses, which are due to expire in 2009.
