According to a June 27 Tengri News report, Kazakhstan scientists have devised a way to make synthetic oil from coal said Ms Valentina Yemelyanova project manager and deputy director of the Scientific Research Institute of New Chemical Technologies and Materials of Al Farabi Kazakh National University.
The method relies on adding hydrogen and requires relatively low pressure, 50 ATM compared to other technology that requires pressure of about 300 ATM. The low pressure Kazakhstani method reduces the energy consumption required to make synthetic oil.
Ms Yemelyanova said that the innovation is valuable because Kazakhstan has vastly more coal than oil. Fairly rapid depletion of Kazakhstani oil will compel the country to seek alternatives soon, the technology’s pioneers say. They have received a government grant to conduct further research.
