It is reported that Mutitu MP Mr Kiema Kilonzo led the residents of Mui Coal basin in Kitui County in rejecting the award of coal mining concession in blocks C and D to a dubious Chinese firm.
The MP who recently led a community delegation to China to study the best mining methods that will not disrupt the social lives of the Mui coal basin residents, dismissed the Fenxi Mining Industry company that had won the mining tender was a fake.
Mr Kiema said during the China visit his team established that the company did have any physical address, vehicles or mines in China, adding that it was apparently cobbled up with a sinister motive to deprive the Mui people of their coal wealth. He said the foreign firm had ganged up with the Great Lakes in its sinister scheme.
The MP called for thorough investigation to establish how Fenxi that was not even registered in China and has not engage in any mining was awarded the Mui coal mining contract. He further said the ownership and the shareholding of the Great Lakes which holds 30 per cent shareholding in Fenxi should be probed.
He was addressing a series of public rallies in the Mui coal belt recently where he distributed the report on his delegation's visit to China. He said the visit was godsend and a eye opener because it had established that the Fenxi mining company does not exist.
Mr Kiema said the delegation has compiled a damning report on the fraud in last year's award of the concession to a non-existent firm. He said 16 companies, some of them respectable multinationals, were denied the contract.
Distributing the reports at public meeting held Karung, Mathuki, Miambani and Mutitu-Ndooa trading centre across the coal built, the MP said the moved the coal mining project should be suspended until the questionable issues are thrashed and new contracts awarded. The MP, who is seeking the Kitui county governor seat said if elected he will ensure that all the county's mineral wealth is protected from grabbers for the benefit of the local residents.
He pledged to tackle the insecurity caused by cattle rustling and banditry in Mutitu, Kyuso,Tseikuru and Mutomo. He was was accompanied by a number of civic leaders and the Kitui branch Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry chairman Wilson Mwema, his deputy Mr Sheikh Ahmed Hassan and Mwingi North parliamentary aspirant Mr Munuve Musyimi.
