Leighton Contractors awarded AUD 240 million contract extension at iron ore mine in SA
Leighton Contractors, through its wholly-owned subsidiary HWE Mining, has been awarded a contract extension for the provision of mining services at the South Middleback Ranges iron ore operations, totaling AUD 240 million.
The 12 month contract, awarded by OneSteel Manufacturing Pty Ltd, is for supervision, equipment, labour, materials and infrastructure at the mine, located 60km south of Whyalla, on the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia. There is also provision for a further four-year contract extension.
Mr Steven Keyser executive GM at Leighton Contractors said that HWE Mining has been the major contractor on site since 1998, and the company's proven track record in iron ore mining was a key factor in securing the contract extension.
He added that "This contract extension gives Leighton Contractors the opportunity to continue to work in partnership with OneSteel, Australia's premier steel manufacturer, and be part of the future success of the SMR operations. I am also hopeful that due to our strong presence and capabilities in SA, we may be presented with further opportunities in the region."
As part of its ongoing commitment to building the capabilities of indigenous people and communities, Leighton Contractors currently employs approximately 52 indigenous people at the mine, and in partnership with OneSteel and the Whyallina Heritage Aboriginal Corporation, supports the sustainable business development of Walga Mining & Services Pty Ltd.
