Associated Press reported that Gary Quarles pointed in March 2011 to the location in Massey Energy's Upper Big Branch coal mine where his son's body was found in April 2010.
Massey Energy Co's year long investigation into the mine explosion that killed 29 of its workers concluded the blast was fueled by an unpreventable surge of natural gas and not coal dust, contradicting the findings of federal regulators and an independent investigation.
The report also leveled new criticism at the federal Mine Safety and Health Administration for conducting a deeply flawed investigation into the worst US coal mining disaster in 40 years.
Former Massey chairman Mr Bobby R Inman released the 102 page report on June 3rd 2011, two days after the company was sold to Alpha Natural Resources Inc for USD 7.1 billion.
Alpha, which said it has not reviewed the report, criticized its release, calling it unauthorized. Alpha said it had told Massey that releasing the report before such a review was inappropriate. It added that "Alpha will conduct its own review into the events at Massey's Upper Big Branch mine and intends to fully cooperate with pending government investigations."
Mr Inman, who is no longer with the company, said he released the report, which was completed several weeks ago, out of a strong sense of responsibility for all those who mined coal.
