The mayor of Coonamble said that coal seam gas exploration threatens the future of his community.

Mr Tom Cullen, who has served as a councilor for more than 25 years, has been voted in as Mayor uncontested and replaces Mr Tim Horan who did not run for this term of council.

He says Coonamble is about to experience a period of growth. He added that "This town's just starting to move and the people are more and more interested in what you're doing and they're more keen to get things done and that's enjoyable and you've got Agrigrain out there on the railway line, they're big with the grain the abattoir's reopening. So, I think it's happening for us and this council I hope in the next four years, I know they will reflect that and make it a stronger town."

However, he has not ruled out some serious challenges for the region in the future.

Mr Cullen said that the council has taken a clear stance again coal seam gas which he says could threaten the region's water security. He added that "Our big issue is coal seam gas. We don't want it but I'm afraid it's going to come anyway. That's my greatest worry. If this town dries up, then this town dries up. I won't be here 30 to 40 years time but my grand kids will be and there's no water left. And that's the unknown."

New councilor Mr Danny Keady who polled the highest at the election has been chosen as Deputy Mayor.
