UK Coal has lured Mr Gareth Williams from his role of heading up a coal division at Anglo American.
Mr David Jones chairman of UK Coal said that Mr Williams's extensive coal mining experience and impressive track record in mine management made him a clear choice to become mining director.
Mr Williams will have a big workload from the start, as UK Coal admitted output from its deep mines would come in at the low end of forecasts this year.
It also said that production at its Daw Mill site near Coventry would be delayed because of difficult geological conditions.
