Anglo American plc announces that Mr Fred Phaswana, a non executive director, has requested to step down from the board in order to take up his new role as chairman of the Standard Bank Group in due course.

Mr Phaswana will continue to serve on the Board until January 1st 2010. He will remain as chairman of Anglo Platinum but has also indicated his intention to step down from that position in due course.

Mr John Parker chairman of Anglo American said that "On behalf of the Board, I would like to thank Fred for his valuable contribution to Anglo American over the last seven years. Fred brought a wealth of expertise and experience to the Board and we wish him every success in his new role as Chairman of Standard Bank."
