Public sector mining and power generation company Neyveli Lignite Corporation has proposed to set up two coal fired power plants of 2,000 MW capacity each in Orissa and Uttar Pradesh with an estimated investment of INR 20,000 crore.

While the Uttar Pradesh power project would come up in joint venture with the Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd, the Orissa project is being contemplated in association with Mahanadhi Coal Fields Ltd.

Mr AR Ansari CMD of NLC told FE that the mining and power company has lined up a slew of projects and they would be commissioned over a period of time. He sad that “We have proposed a 2,000 MW coal based power plant in UP in association with UPRVUNL. In fact, a suitable site in Kanpur nagar district has been identified for the project. The process is on. NLC has asked UPRVUNL to approach the state government of Uttar Pradesh to get the necessary in-principle approvals for land.”

Similarly, a proposal has been put forward for a INR 10,000 crore, 2,000 MW coal fired power plant in Rengali Taluk in Orissa. An application for land has been sent to Industrial Promotion and Investment Corporation of Orissa to get in-principle approval for allotment of land. The project might be executed in JV with Mahanadhi Coal Fields.

Already, NLC, Mahanadhi and Hindalco have a JV to set up a 20 million tonne per annum coal mine at Talabira in Orissa. Using their share of coal from this mine, NLC and Mahanadhi are planning to set up a 1,000-mw power project as a joint venture at IB valley in Orissa at an estimated cost of INR 5,000 crore.

Mr Ansari said that “Contouring the area and collection of land details will be taken up soon adding NLC’s share in the projects would be partly funded through internal accruals and long term loans.”

The company is also in the process of setting up a 50 MW capacity wind power plant in Tirunelveli district in Tamil Nadu at a cost of INR 325 crore. Tenders were floated sometime back for sourcing the power plant equipment and bids have been received.

Mr Ansari further said that “We are currently evaluating the bids and will take a decision soon adding the land for the project would be brought in by the selected main equipment supplier. NLC has already allocated necessary funds for the wind power project.”
